Fowlers Troop & the Deptford Jack in the Green

The Deptford Jack in the Green goes out in South East London, and sometimes the City, every May Day.

On the day...the procession

Just a few points to help ensure everything runs smoothly on May Day:

This is the Order of procession:

1.    Banner

2.    Jack with attendant/guide

3.    musicians

4.    everyone else!

Please keep to this and do not get in between the musicians and Jack.

Throughout the day

This event relies on the goodwill of the local police and organisations such as the Greenwich Town Centre management, the Old Royal Naval College and the Royal Parks so there are a very few rules which we need to follow in order to keep to the famously relaxed style of the Deptford Jack in the Green.  They are:

  • Do not walk in the road!  [sometimes unavoidable, but listen out and keep an eye on what those at the front are doing]
  • Keep together!  We do not want to let the procession get too strung out; also important when crossing the road.
  • No collecting in Cutty Sark Gardens, the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College or Greenwich Park.
  • Pedestrians have priority on the footpaths in Greenwich Park,
  • If you have small children or dogs, keep an eye on them - it is hard for musicians, when playing, to see what is happening at ground level!

Thank you.
