Fowlers Troop & the Deptford Jack in the Green

The Deptford Jack in the Green goes out in South East London, and sometimes the City, every May Day.

The Route

START [opens 11.00] Dog and Bell, 116 Prince St, Deptford, SE8 3JD.  Leave 12.00.  

12.30     Sail Loft, 11 Victoria Parade, SE10 9FR.    .    

13.30     LUNCH, MUSIC and DANCE STOP.  Cutty Sark Gardens. From Cutty Sark Gardens: through Old Royal Naval College.

14.30     Star and Garter, 60 Old Woolwich Rd, Greenwich, SE10 9NY.  

15.30     Plume of Feathers, 19 Park Vista, Greenwich SE10 9LZ.  

17.00     Rose and Crown, 1 Crooms Hill, Greenwich SE10 8ER.  

18.00     Ashburnham Arms, 25 Ashburnham Grove,  Greenwich, SE10 8UH.

May Day 2016

This was the 2016 route:

START [opens 11.30]: Dog and Bell, 116 Prince St  London, London SE8 3JD,

13.15: Gypsy Moth, Cutty Sark Gardens. [LUNCH STOP]

NO DRINKS OUTSIDE PUB PERIMETER AT Gipsy Moth. 

No collecting at Cutty Sark Gardens or in Old Royal Naval College,

14.30: Star and Garter, 60 Old Woolwich Rd, Greenwich, London SE10 9NY,

15.30: Plume of Feathers, 19 Park Vista  London, London SE10 9LZ,

16.00: Rose and Crown, 1 Crooms Hill, Greenwich SE10 8ER,

16.45: Ashburnham Arms, 25 Ashburnham Grove,  Greenwich, London SE10 8UH. 

FINISH.

12.15: Duke, 125 Creek Rd, London SE8 3BU, leave at 12.30,
12.45: Old Loyal Britons, 62 Thames St, London SE10 9BX [lunch stop], leave at 13.30, via Old Royal Naval College*,
14.00: Star and Garter, 60 Old Woolwich Rd, Greenwich, London SE10 9NY, leave at 14.35,
14.50: Plume of Feathers, 19 Park Vista  London, London SE10 9LZ, leave at 15.20, via Greenwich Park*,
16.00: Greenwich Union, 56, Royal Hill, Greenwich, London, SE10 8RT, leave at 16.30,
17.00: Ashburnham Arms, 25 Ashburnham Grove,  Greenwich, London SE10 8UH.

2014 was the 30th anniversary of this incarnation of the Deptford Jack in the Green. Here is a picture from 1984 with Rodger Molyneux-Roberts at the front, Chris Pugh behind and Mo Johnson carrying the Jack:

May Celebrations 2013

In 2013 May Day fell on Wednesday 1st May and Fowlers Troop and the Deptford Jack in the Green visited Deptford and Greenwich. This was the route (the timings were probably out by about an hour!):

12.00 Depart from Dog and Bell, 116 Prince St London, Greater London SE8 3JD. (pub will open at 11.00),

12.45 Rose and Crown, 1 Crooms Hill, Greenwich, London SE10 8ER,

13.45 Star and Garter, 60 Old Woolwich Rd, Greenwich, London SE10 9NY,

14.25 Plume of Feathers, 19 Park Vista London, London SE10 9LZ,

15.25 Richard I (the Tolley), 52/54, Royal Hill, Greenwich, London, SE10 8RT,

16.10 Ashburnham Arms, 25 Ashburnham Grove, Greenwich, London SE10 8UH.

Most of the route is on public streets but between the Rose and Crown and the Star and Garter we processed through the Old Royal Naval College and between the Plume of Feathers and the Richard I, we processed through Greenwich Park.

Dressing the Jack took place the night before, Tuesday 30th April 2013 at the Dog and Bell, from 8pm. Thank you to those who brough flowers to decorate the Jack, which as always were very welcome.

Hastings Jack in the Green: http://www.hastingsjack.co.uk/prog.html celebrate their 30th anniversary this year and we joined them in Hastings on Monday 7th May 2012. Jack travelled to Hastings on Saturday 5th May and was reflowered on Sunday 6th May. Fowlers Troop and the Deptford Jack in the Green brought up the rear of the procession from Hastings Old Town up to the Castle.
