Fowlers Troop and the Deptford Jack in the Green feature in this new book: Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids: a journey through the English Ritual Year by Sara Hannant. Sara has been coming along on May Day for the last few years and has recorded her impressions as well as some lovely photos. The book is published by Merrell.
The book was launched on 24th October 2011 at the Horniman Museum which has a display of photos from the book. There was a small presence from Fowlers Troop at the launch playing some music, there are some pictures on Merrell's FaceBook page.

One day to go before May Day! I am just about to set off to buy flowers and then go on to the Ash to start dressing the Jack.

Neil Transpontine has a new pamphlet out "May Day in South London: a history", which covers May Day events such as may queens, horse parades, demonstrations and, of course the Jack in the Green tradition, including the Deptford Jack.
Look at the information on the Transpontine blog for details of how to buy it. If you are in the area, the Review bookshop in Peckham is selling it and is a great little bookshop.
